WELCOME to The Beach House

The Beach House is the name of this secret page and home to the Shoreline Quiltalong. Here, Bill and Weeks will lead you step-by-step to complete your stash-friendly Shoreline quilt with links to video tutorials, a live Q+A and detailed written instructions. All details for this quiltalong, including links to download the four installments and view the supporting videos, will be posted on the secret webpage above according to the schedule. The instructions and videos will be released in four installments and will remain available for at least six months from your purchase date. Print out thisShoreline guide or safeguard the address of this secret page as your initial download link expires in 60 days.

Our Approach to Quiltalongs

Each of our quiltalongs varies in its focus and structure. This one will differ from previous quiltalongs in that we’ll show you the structure of the design and many ways in which you’ll be able to customize your version. Some participants will be completing installments each week as they are released. Others will be working more slowly, while some won’t start until the last installment has been released. What matters to us is that you work at a pace that’s fun and manageable for you.

What You Can Expect

We’ll be breaking this pattern and the techniques needed into four weekly installments so participants can make choices along the way. In each installment there will be a pre-recorded video tutorial and we’ll also have a live Q&A session on Facebook after the first installment to answer any questions you have related to fabric selection. The Q&A will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel for those who aren’t on Facebook.

We’ll show you different options for making and using templates for these easy-to-piece curves. You’ll have the option of cutting the curves using a rotary cutter or scissors. Template plastic is optional. You will need a printer and paper to print on US letter-size or A4 metric paper.

You can find community, support and help on the Modern Quilt Studio Patterns and Fabrics Facebook group as well. We offer feedback there on as many posts as possible daily. This is a public group of more than 20,000 quilters in which members are working on different quiltalongs, including this one.  You’re welcome to share your progress there but we ask that you not share details or measurements from the pattern, photos of the pattern, nor share links to the pattern or to this secret page. Participation in the Facebook group is not required but a fun bonus.

For help finding downloads on your device or providing computer/tablet/phone/printer assistance, check with your local library or tech-savvy friends. We are unable to assist with individual technology questions.

Variations

By definition, a quiltalong is an event in which participants are making the same quilt. We’ll provide lots of options for customizing yours but ask that you not encourage others to follow instructions other than those in the pattern. Our focus is on creating a wonderful experience leading to a great quilt. The preview video and first installment will discuss variations in greater detail. Below are illustrations of various possibilities. We’ll provide exact directions for the version we’re making (shown at the top of the page) and advice for how you can customize your version to make it similar to ones shown below.

Sizes, Fabric Selection and Material Requirements

The amount of fabric needed to complete your quilt will depend on what size you are making, how wide your vertical strips are, and if you’re using scraps or yardage. The yardage requirements below are an estimate. We’ll be combining our 2025 LTD bundle, our Spring bundle and fabrics from our stash to make a napping quilt. We won’t use all of the fabric in those bundles but we want the light and dark values for this quilt and will use the remaining fabric for other projects.

You can make the baby/wall size quilt using just the 2025 LTD bundle (one Fat Quarter each from all 22 fabrics in the line). To make the napping size with the bundle, you’ll want to combine it with additional lights (such as our Spring bundle) or a solid background fabric. In general using either all solids or all prints/batiks/yarn dyes works best.

The May 2025 Quilts First! livestream on Facebook will help you better understand fabric requirements and how to pull a palette together from your stash if you are sewing without the 2025 LTD bundle. A recording of the livestream will be available afterwards on our YouTube channel. We’ll also go into additional detail in the preview video released in mid-May.

Here’s a general list of what you will need. Keep in mind that the way you customize your quilt may affect quantities needed. An early version of the Shoreline guide had different numbers of sheets needed for the templates. Please use these quantities.

Baby quilt/wall hanging size (approximately 39″ x 46″)

Total yardage for pieced top – 3 yards
Binding – ½ yard
Backing – 1½ yards
Batting – 43″ x 50″
Cardstock or optional Template plastic – 5—8½”x 11″ sheets

Napping size (approximately 54″ x 76″)

Total yardage for pieced top – 6 yards*
* in general you’ll need a bit over ½ yard for each horizontal band
Binding – ¾ yard
Backing – 3½ yards
Batting – 58″ x 80″
Cardstock or optional Template plastic – 7—8½”x 11″ sheets

Queen size (approximately 100″ x 99″):

Total yardage for pieced top – 14 yards
Binding – 1 yard
Backing – 9½ yards
Batting – 104″ x 103″
Cardstock or optional Template plastic – 7—8½”x 11″ sheets (We listed a larger quantity earlier but developed a better way of doing things. Sorry for any inconvenience!)

Updates

We aim to get everything right. Three sets of eyes proof our instructions. However, if an error sneaks in, we will immediately correct the instructions here at the Beach House with a note explaining any change. The only change we have made so far is updating the number of sheets of optional template plastic for each size. The updated quantities are shown above and in the current downloads.
