WELCOME to The Bakehouse
Bakers Bill and Weeks will lead you as you manage Sweet Tooth’s bakery truck. Between bakery truck events, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind napping quilt (54 1/2″x80″) or queen variation (97″x94″). All details for this quiltalong, including links to download the six individual installments and view the supporting videos, will be posted here on this secret webpage known as “The Bakehouse”. This is a private page; please do not share links to the page, the pattern or videos.
OUR APPROACH TO QUILTALONGS
Each of our quiltalongs varies in its focus and structure but they all have fun story lines. Some participants will be completing assignments each week as they are released. Others will be working more slowly, while some won’t start until the final design has been revealed. What matters to us is that you work at a pace that’s fun and manageable for you. Understand there will be a start date and a reveal date for the mystery aspect but quilters are welcome to work and finish at their own pace.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
As Bakery Assistants in charge of the Sweet Tooth truck, you’ll have six installments to complete your quilt. There will be surprises and twists, so read each installment carefully. You can find community, support and help on the Modern Quilt Studio Patterns and Fabrics Facebook group. This is a public group of more than 20,000 quilters in which members are working on different quiltalongs, including this one. You’re welcome to share your progress there but we ask that you never reveal details of the pattern nor share links to the pattern or to this page. Participation in the Facebook group is not required but a fun bonus.
Each installment is a pdf download with clear instructions and illustrations. There is a companion video for each. Finished measurements for each unit will be provided. Three sets of eyes proof our instructions. However, occasionally an error sneaks in. We will immediately correct the instructions here at the Bakehouse with a note if there’s any change. By definition, a quiltalong is an event in which participants are making the same quilt.
Although each person’s quilt will be unique, it is an unwelcome distraction when participants decide to make a quilt that’s different from the focus of the quiltalong and try to take the quiltalong in a different direction. Please refrain from suggesting that other participants follow different instructions than those given. Our focus is on creating a wonderful experience leading to a great quilt.
For help finding downloads on your device or providing computer/tablet/phone/printer assistance, check with your local library or tech-savvy friends. We are unable to assist with individual technology questions.
SCHEDULE
The quiltalong starts February 14th. Links will be posted by 12 noon CST on the dates listed below. In addition, we’ll answer your questions as part of our Quilts First! livestreams on February 1st and March 1st on the main Modern Quilt Studio Facebook page. Recordings are available later on our YouTube channel. Weeks and Bill will reveal their completed quilt in the Installment 6 video and on social media the day of the last assignment, March 28th. Participants are welcome to share their work in progress and finished quilts in the Modern Quilt Studio Patterns and Fabrics Facebook group and on their personal social media accounts at any time. We ask that you include in your posts that the project is part of Modern Quilt Studio’s Sweet Tooth Modern Mystery Quiltalong. Buttons for individual installments and videos will be made active on the listed dates below.

FABRIC SELECTION and REQUIREMENTS
To achieve successful transparency effects, we designed the Transparency Watercolors fabric line and offer a special Sweet Tooth Half Yard Bundle from the line for this quiltalong. This bundle consists of ½-yard cuts of 22 fabrics from the line and has ample yardage for the pieced napping quilt top. You’ll also need 3 yards of a contrasting background fabric (such as a solid or small-scale, low-contrast print in white or cream), fabric for the binding (½–¾ yd.) and backing (3½–5 yds.)
This is a large quantity of fabric, you’ll have a lot of extra at the end of the quiltalong. Having all this fabric will allow each quilter to make different choices throughout the quiltalong. Those choices determine how much of each fabric is used and we wanted to make sure no one ran out.
Watch the preview video for detailed fabric-selection advice before choosing your fabrics. The bundle is ideal but not required. Other small-scale prints and solids can work. This pattern doesn’t lend itself to large-scale or high-contrast prints. No two quilts will be identical even for those using the Sweet Tooth Bundle.
Napping size fabric requirements (54 1/2″ x 80″)
One Sweet Tooth Half Yard Bundle has enough fabric for the napping size when combined with 3 yards of contrasting background fabric and your choice of binding fabric. This is a large quantity of fabric, you’ll have a lot of extra at the end of the quiltalong. Having all this fabric will allow each quilter to make different choices throughout the quiltalong. These choices determine how much of each fabric is used and we wanted to make sure no one ran out. We recommend:

- 22 different ½-yard cuts of small-scale prints or solids. Details are provided in the preview video.
- 3 yards of contrasting background fabric. This needs to be distinctly different from the colors in your half-yard cuts. We recommend a light contrasting background such as Benartex’s Superior Solids Vanilla or White. A dark fabric such as Espresso, Dark Blue or Eggplant makes a luminous version.
- ½–¾ yard binding fabric, depending on your binding method
- 3½–5 yards backing fabric, depending on your preferred piecing method for backings. The minimum you need is 3½ yards. If you require extra width for longarm finishing or want to minimize seams on your backing, 5 yards is ideal.
- 58″ × 84″ batting
Queen size fabric requirements (97″ x 94″)
Two Sweet Tooth Half Yard Bundles would provide PLENTY of fabric since the very most you’d need of any one fabric is 3/4 yard. This is a large quantity of fabric, you’ll have a lot of extra at the end of the quiltalong. Having all this fabric will allow each quilter to make different choices throughout the quiltalong. These choices determine how much of each fabric is used and we wanted to make sure no one ran out.
